In a previous post about censorship, I talked about a mural that had been taken down. Let me explain. Last year, I was in the intermediate two-dimensional art with five other seniors at the time. Our art teacher came to us one day and asked us if we wanted to paint a mural for the school in the student union in request of the new principal. This would be our opportunity to “leave our mark" on the school, so of course we all agreed to do it. It took us the entire year to finish the mural. We would go from class to the student union at least twice a week to work on the mural for the hour we had for class. Since my last class of the day was art, I would go there and stay a little bit after school to just look at it and see what we had to focus on for the next day. As the year passed, the mural came more and more together, and we were proud of it. My art teacher also loved that it was coming together so nicely, even after all the times we messed up with the colors. Fast forward the end of the year, we were looking at the mural and it looked amazing.
We wanted to portray the message that even though many people say the sky is the limit, there’s infinite space beyond that. There shouldn’t be a cap on our opportunities. As they graduated, I had one more year and I was excited to see how students would react to the finished mural because during the process, there were students who stopped by and were shocked at what we were doing.
Beginning of this year, I had been busy with college application season and unable to go see the reactions at the beginning of the year. When I did get the chance to go to the student union, I looked over at the wall to look at the mural we created, only to be taken aback by a blank white wall. I asked the lady in the student union what happened and she said that someone just came in and started scrapping the wall down. I took this knowledge and shared it with my art teacher, who didn’t believe me at first until she went to see the wall herself. I had also told the other students and they were in disbelief. When the other students came to see the wall before winter break, they were so angry with what had happened with the wall.
This is why I feel upset with the current issue going on at school right now. Only admin could have gotten rid of the mural. They has been playing the same game with every issue that comes their way. This happened with the recent slavery activity. They told the students not to talk about the issue at school, and so when we talked about it online, admin got upset…AGAIN!! What are we supposed to do about this issue? Admin needs to address these issue instead of beating around the bushes. The problem now is figuring out who wanted to take down this mural. By the end of this year, I really want to figure out who was behind this.

Anyways, that's it for this week. I have been thinking of ways to talk to admin about this issue indirectly, so if anyone would like to help me with that, leave a comment down below and we'll get talking. Thank you to everyone for reading this and I hope you have a wonderful three-day weekend. Peace out!
